Water World: Life in Lagos’ Floating Community

Life Above the Lagoon in Makoko

Makoko is not just houses on water—Makoko is a strong, lively community in Lagos. Here, land and water mix. For example, every day, children paddle to school in small canoes. Shops and kitchens float on boats, moving with the tide. Because of this, daily life is always connected to the water.

Community Spirit in Makoko

What struck me most during my time in this community was how people here support each other. Neighbours help neighbours, and everyone shares what they have. As a result, this community lives like a big family. People work together, look out for each other, and find joy in daily life—even when life is hard.

Facing Challenges and Looking Forward

Many families in the settlement live with very little. Poverty is part of daily life. However, there is a strong commitment to a better future. Parents send their children to school by canoe, hoping for more opportunities. In addition, people use their skills and creativity to solve problems and care for each other.

Makoko: Home and Hope

To many, the community might look fragile or strange. But for those who live here, it is home. Life is simple, but full of skill and care. Every walkway, canoe, and floating shop shows how creative and hardworking the Makoko community is. Ultimately, this is not just a place on the edge. It is a world full of hope, strength, and bright stories.
