The Durbar Chronicles: Northern Nigeria’s Grand Festivals

This series presents a small selection from a vibrant tradition that spans centuries and continues to thrive today. Each year, the larger emirates in Northern Nigeria organise a Durbar to mark important events in the region. These historic celebrations feature spectacular horse processions, traditional dancers, and regal ceremonies.
The Durbar festivals are more than pageantry—they are a profound expression of cultural identity and pride, sustaining a living tradition that helps keep ancestral customs alive even as the world changes. The Emir, as traditional leader, embodies authority, heritage, and community unity.
Through this series, I aim to convey the vibrant atmosphere of the Durbar, revealing how these occasions inspire, connect, and celebrate the heritage of Northern Nigeria in the modern world.
